Technological Skills

This section will cover technological skills that I regularly use to complete projects. I see these skills as a valuable skill that is transferable to many different situations and projects. I will try to leave robotics-specific skills out of this section, if you want more information about that check out this page. Either way, the skills listed are very important to have when working in a technologically related field, or any field for that matter. From grinding blocks of metal to typing on them, this page covers a lot.

Coding

Absolute dominion over the actions of a computer, which these days, is everything.

I have done software applications programming, electronics programming, web development, robotics programming, game development, and competitive programming.  I have made 20+ games using python, I have programmed in Java and C++ to intelligently control robots in the VEX, FTC, and FRC platforms, I have made websites similar to this one using HTML, CSS, and Javascript, I have made small text-based and GUI desktop applications, and I participate in competitive programming contests such as the Candian Computing Contest, where in 2021 I cam out in the top 2% in the country.

Electronics

The bridge to bring the digital world of code into the physical world of humans

While all my robotics projects integrate electrical components, not all of them are equally involved in the sense that systems like the Vex V5 brain or the FTC Control Hubs are more of less plug and play; in terms of electrical. So the projects where I have really got involved with the nitty gritty are often ones where I have used an Arduino, a much more bare-bones controller compared to the others listed. For instance, in my 3 DOF motorized pod  I built a motor controller using a transistor for speed control and a double pull double throw relay for direction control of the motor. Other projects I built that have been very electrical focused include a home security system, a arduino guide, and a project that converted your boring old normal mouse into one that can run around like a real mouse. To view those projects click the link below.

Video Editing

Seeing is believing, control what people see, control what people believe.

I have been editing videos for many different purposes. For example, one project I work on is creating robot programming tutorials with FIRST Ontario (image on the right). Whether it is robot programming tutorials or an English film analysis, my editor of choice is HitFilm Express.  Video editing is a powerful tool to explain an idea or promote a product so I try to make most of my recent projects into videos. Check out my youtube channel to see some examples, or click the button below to see a film analysis for an English project.

Machining

The ability to take a thought, an idea, and turn it into a tangible reality

Most of my experience with using machines in the manufacturing/prototyping process has come from my manufacturing class and robotics. I am now familiar with using a 3D printer, laser cutter, bandsaw, drill press, lathe, milling machine and of course all basic hand tools. I was able to use the 3D printer to make intricate parts for my optics project. I was able to use the laser cutter to precisely and neatly cut out walls for my dream house. I was able to use the bandsaw, drill press, lathe, and milling machine to modify existing aluminum/steel parts so that they would fit our application in robotics.  Knowing how to use these machines and tools helps me quickly and precisely transform ideas into products.

CAD (3D modeling)

Professional-grade 3D CAD software for product design and engineering

I was first introduced to Autodesk Inventor in grade 9 through my exploring technologies course. Since then I have used that knowledge for everything from creating custom FTC/FRC parts and designing my dream home. Learning this industry-standard design tool is going to be a big benefit to me when I enter the workforce.  Since then I have spent countless hundred hours and completed several projects using it. Recently I have been extensively trying out Inventors sibling product, Fusion 360, which has been amazing. All of the projects I have created for the Tech section were created using CAD software, so take a look at those. Below I will link the grade 11 tech section, but feel free to check out the other grades.
